  • How do you get to the River Kwai from Bangkok?

By train: reach either Kanchanaburi or River Kwai Bridge stations, there are three trains daily to Nam Tok terminus, the first at 5.55 am and the others later on coming from Bangkok. It takes two full hours to get to Nam Tok, see timetable.

  • How many hours Bangkok to Kanchanaburi?

Roughly 2 hours. simply google train transport from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi
  • Is The Bridge on the River Kwai a true story?

The film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" dramatized the WWII story of the Thailand-Burma Railway, yet it was largely fictional. Over 65,000 Allied P.O.W.s battled torture, starvation, and disease to hack the 255-mile railway out of harsh jungle for the Japanese.
  • Are there crocodiles in the river Kwai?

Many were buried here, while hundreds of bodies were thrown into the River Kwai. Even the crocodiles stopped eating human flesh because so many corpses were floating in the river.
  • Does the bridge over the River Kwai still exist?

Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai is real, and is still used by local passenger trains from Bangkok to Nam Tok.
  • Who blew up the bridge over the River Kwai?

In late 1944 the US Air Force and British RAF started to bomb the lines and bridges to break the Japanese supply lines. The metal bridge was bombed at least ten times. In 1946 the British army destroyed 40 kilometres of the line to block the connection with Burma.

As others have said it is a must to know and understand the history of the bridge to get any appreciation for the site. If you don't you will think you are just looking at a bridge. Wonderful to have been there but slightly put off by volume of tourists and the toy like yellow train that now crawls up and down it. Still worth the trip.
Pip1980 ,
Was nice to see the bridge over the river as part of our four day stay in Kanchanaburi - but knowing the true history behind it i.e. this river had its name changed as a result of pressure on the thai government after the hollywood movie was released is absolutely vital to fully understand and appreciate this site in the proper way.
peekaboo19 ,
Although the bridge is not the original it was still pretty cool to see it. You are allowed to walk across it and even allowed to be on it while the train crossed. Well worth a visit.
Scamp1960 ,
Just as we arrived there was a thunder storm the roads and the area around the bridge became flooded. However in a break in the clouds we managed to walk over the bridge and take in the sights although nearly everything was closed up because of the weather. Glad we made the effort it was well worth while.
Gow ,
It's worth visiting for the history, it's sad to imagine the railways was built with prisoners of war and thinking of how difficult it must have been for the prisoner's involved. The setting of the bridge was at a lovely place in Kanchanaburi. I could relax there all day. Recommended.
Jana K ,
The place is sad memory of mostly British soldiers that were forced to work. I don't want to sound disrespectful, but now it's a good spot for pictures and golden mine for locals that want to earn some money with this attraction.
fraulin5spd ,
We had a great day on this trip with Jenny. She is an absolute delight & so concerned about making your excursion special. We booked thru Viator & were very happy.
Murton68 ,
It never does to forget history and this bridge stands to remind us how many thousands of people died during the war constructing the bridge. The museum was very interesting and the whole thing was a humbling experience. We also visited the nearby grave yard which serves as a reminder of just how young those who lost their lives were.
Juliewtm ,
A must see, If you are in the area. Fun to walk across the bridge and there is a temple and a small market on the other side. But it is a bridge and there are many tourist.
98joyb ,
Great respect for the history about the bridge. But let’s be honest it’s a tourist trap. Nice and if you can, do. But if you can’t, don’t feel badly.
1nitehawk ,
If you enjoy history and south east Asia this is a must. Many foot massage shops, barbers, restaurants and museums. The surrounding area is full of great street food and shops. I found a great selection of tumbled stones for my artwork at a great price. The bridge it lit up at night and is a beautiful. Very sad story behind the history but is a tribute to all of those who paid the price for world peace.
CAMTLM2019 ,
Short visit to walk across. Well worth it if you’re a history buff like my husband. Some decent restaurants nearby on the river to eat at and the nearby death museum and cemetery is worth the extra 30 minutes. I would t pay for an expensive
GoToGate13 ,
A nice place to go to reflect on what our ancestors were up against during the war. I thoroughly recommend this place.
sawbograham ,
Great place to visit and went on the railway too. Grew up watching the film so a must see. Well worth the day out
220shirazj ,
Stayed here in town for a few nights, so was great to see the bridge during the day and at in the evening, where it's a lot quieter. You can still walk across the bridge and if you time it just right, you can catch sunset as well as see the train go across the bridge at around 5.30pm.
Peterhigson ,
I really wanted to see this when in Thailand, and really glad we did. Whilst it isn’t the original bridge - just to see what these guys had to construct under the conditions they endured is humbling. One criticism (and its a big one) the theme park feel of the bridge did not do the location justice - if anything trivialised it - in my opinion.
