Sanam Chandra Palace is a tiny castle-like structure built in a combination of French and English styles, but with adaptions for the tropical climate The palace grounds is located on a site Nakhon Pathom, Thailand and consists of five buildings and a Ganesh shrine. The palace was built from 1907 to 1911 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), and has a view of Phra Pathom Chedi.

The name derives from the Pali words Nagara Pathama, meaning First city, and Nakhon Pathom is often referred as Thailand’s oldest city. Archaeological remains have been linked to the (pre-Thai) Dvaravati kingdom, dating to the 6th through 11th centuries.

Nakhon Pathom Province centuries ago was a coastal city on the route between China and India; due to sedimentation from the Chao Phraya river, the coast line moved much farther to sea. When the Tha Chin river changed its course, the city lost its main water source and thus was deserted, the population moving to a city called Nakhon Chaisi (or Sirichai). King Mongkut (Rama IV) ordered the restoration of Phra Pathom Chedi, which was then crumbling and abandoned in the jungle. A city gradually formed around it, bringing new life to Nakhon Pathom. A museum presents the archaeological record of the city’s history.

Major settlement of the province included emigration beginning in the reign of King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II), which included Khmer villages (e.g. Don Yai Hom), the Lanna populated (Baan Nua) and Lao Song villages (e.g. Don Kanak), as well as a major influx of Southern Chinese in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today Nakhon Pathom attracts people from all over Thailand, most notably from Bangkok and the Northeastern, plus Burmese migrant workers. The province includes industrial zones, major university towns, government offices relocated from Bangkok and agricultural and transport hubs.

Sampran Riverside (formerly known as Rose Garden Riverside) is a family-run property close to Bangkok, where visitors can experience authentic Thai way of life and learn about our local wisdom. For decades it has been considered one of Bangkok’s favorite attractions because of the obvious dedication to preserving Thailand’s natural and cultural heritage by engaging with the local community. It all began in 1962, when one family cultivated roses to supply them to Bangkok flower markets and their garden of blossoming roses attracted visitors who then referred to the place as ‘Suan Sampran’ or ‘the Rose Garden’. Since then, with the family’s unique vision and under the care of three generations, Sampran Riverside has grown gradually to a 70-acre riverside property that is more like a community rather than a ‘typical’ resort.

Today our facilities in the property include a 4 star riverside hotel with 160 rooms, 6 antique Thai houses around a serene lake, Arusaya Spa, 4 restaurants, 10 meetings rooms, a 10-acre Organic Farm, a Weekend Farmer’s Market and the unique Thai Village Cultural Centre, a popular tourist attraction for over 40 years now.

Whether it is a desire for an eco-cultural tour or simply to relax and rejuvenate, Sampran Riverside provides a perfect city break for a one day trip near Bangkok or an overnight trip all year round.

hunglow ,
nice big park to have a stroll. did not go into any of the buildings but the grounds are well maintained.
Nattita Ngamwong ,
My girlfriend and I went to this palace a 6 months ago. We went there 2 times, first in the afternoon, and later in the evening. The space is covered with plenty of trees and green plants, but you should not go there at noon though, it's too hot. the palace has many photo-taking points if you go there in the afternoon. There are not too many people, good lighting for taking pictures. I recommended taking pictures using the spray from the sprinkler as a background. It is so gorgeous! In the evening, the palace will be absolutely changed by a lot of people coming to do exercise. There are many types of activities that can be done here. For example, running, swimming, playing badminton, or just chillin' in the yard, like we did. Anyway, there are no drinks selling inside, do bring them yourself. Last but not least, no shorts are allowed at any time of the day.
Oudyoudy ,
Nice palace in Nakornprathom that build in King Rama 6. A lot of green and building that combined of Thai and European architect.
omega123 ,
As for Sanam Chandra, it is best to take the motorbike taxi as this town hardly has a taxi plying the roads. The palace ground is not impressive, needs for attention. Most of the displays are mediocre. The buildings had been given some restoration.
Song of Life ,
An historic palace complex built about 100 years ago for King Rama IV for when Rama IV would go on pilgrimage to Wat Phatom Chedi. Lovely grounds to walk around and see the other Royal residences, all but one opened to the public. There is a small charge for foreigners and no shorts above the knee or sleeveless shirts as it is a Royal property.
Sherry A ,
The grounds are lovely and this stop was a refreshing break from temples and crowded market shopping. The history of the royals in Thailand is an interesting study from USA perspective and seeing this area sparked the imagination.
Sunny Y ,
Before you make a trip to see the Sanam Chandra Palace, make sure you wear appropriate clothing. Your shoulders will need to be covered or you will not be allowed to enter. It is free to enter the Palace.
The grounds of the Palace is beautifully maintained and there is a lot of open spaces to enjoy nature. You will find many roosters roaming the grounds of the Palace as well as squirrels.
It was very calming walking around and admiring the Palace as well as the other structures. There are 5 buildings and a shrine. I would recommend taking your time to enjoy as much of what it has to offer.
Enjoy King Rama VI’s beautiful residence.
vincentloicbenoia ,
It was nice when you could actually get inside the buildings and look around. They are under renovations apparently. Nice to know Rama VI better and the way he was living during his reign. Wear proper attire because they guard this place firmly. Usual trick, if you can enter the buildings, farangs will pay more that the Thais...
JJ K ,
This "summer palace" termed the moon palace was begun by King Rama 5 but is most remembered from Rama 6's residence. It is an interesting mix of Thai and Western architecture that has recently been restored by the adjacent Univ of Art and Culture. Along walk to see all the attractions. Weekends are best time to visit; altho crowded the univ students often offer free performances of Thai cultural arts and music. It is encouraged that visitors wear modest dress (no shorts); women are invited to rent a traditional Thai outfit to add to the atmosphere.
jobst56 ,
We just came to Nakhon Pathom for the palace, but closed for renovation. Pity, established under Rama IV about 100 years ago, it must be quite beautiful.
The-Wanderlust-Boys ,
The grounds are beautiful and provides great insight as to how King Rama VI the lived. Sanam Chandra Palace is a great place to visit to learn more about Thai history and culture.
JAYTRIEMME ,
This place was located in the center of Nakornpatom Province and closed with Silapakorn University. If you sightseeing in the morning you had to pay for ticket and can sightseeing inside the building but if you come to see after 4 pm it for fee charge to sightseeing around. This place have big area and you can bring your pet inside too but you had to wear a polite clothes .All area cover the green tree make feel fresh and not hot too much. There have more corner to sightseeing and take some picture too.
Robyn L ,
Take the guided tour and hire a golf-cart to check out the grounds. It is a beautifully maintained example of a Thai Royal Palace and worth the time out on your journey to learn more about King Rama 6 and the great work he did around Thailand.
dinna g ,
Walking around the palace. Visiting an old palace which is each one has their own story. They still keep the palace in a good condition.
Robert 'Pete' Parsons ,
Great place to visit but extremely hot climate, lots of scenery, and friendly people. Bad news is they're also using a corrupt system to charge foreigners more.
John K ,
I don't usually like visiting palaces, but this place is undoubtedly worth a visit!! It combines different architectural styles, from colonial and traditional Thai to European medieval.. Everything is in a perfect order and serenity is, for me, the main characteristic of this place.. Don't forget to visit it, if you come to Nakhon Pathom. You'll be incredibly pleased!!!
