Highlight

Damnoensaduak is believed to be one of a well-known and an attractive travelling sites. Historically, Damnoensaduak was actually the name of the canal dug in the reign of King Rama IV by the military men and the people of Rajburi, Samutsakorn and Samutsongkram Province directed by Phayasrisuriyawong, the minister of Defence. In those days without rivers and canals, transportation was almost motionless; King Rama IV with his great concern over the country’s future economic growth, he finally had the canal dug to connect the Taachin River in Samutsakorn Province and Maklong River in Samutsongkram Province together.

Nowadays Damnoensaduak is one of a provincial district of Rajburi Province. Most people live densely along both sides of the canal from one end of the canal to another. The majority of this people are agriculturists. They grow several different kinds of fruit and vegetable for examples oranges, grapes, papayas, cabbages, bean, onion and etc. The land in this area is naturally fertile. Apart from providing transportation, Damnoensaduak Canal also provides farmers with adequate water for agricultural purposes for the whole year around. More than 200 small canals were dug by local peasants to connect with it to get water to splatter their land. Moreover; these small canals also become protitiouus ways of taking their agricultural products to the markets in neighbouring provinces and Bangkok. Day in and day out from about 8 a.m. to about 11 a.m. the Floating Market is routinely crowded with hundrreds of vendors and purchasers floating in their small rowing boats selling and buying or exchanging their goods. What they purchase are particularly food, fruit and vegetable which mostly brought from their own orchards. Continue to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market 2.

  • How do I get from Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market?

Damnoen Saduak floating market is located in Ratchaburi province at around 100 kilometers from Bangkok and can be reached by car in around one and a half hours. Take the Pinklao – Nakhon Chai Sri road (Highway 338) and turn right to Amphoe Damnoen Saduak.

  • Which is the best floating market to visit in Bangkok?

5 Best Floating Markets to Visit in Bangkok
    1. Amphawa Floating Market. The ultimate afternoon getaway. Image credit: Fabio Achilli.
    2. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Must-see tourist-savvy spot.
    3. Taling Chan Floating Market. Float-and-shop without traveling far.
    4. Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market. Take a ride into the past.
    5. Bang Phli Floating Market. A truly authentic experience.
  • Is the floating market in Bangkok worth it?

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is still the most popular floating market in Bangkok as it is the oldest floating market in Thailand and a landmark for decades. Although the market evolved more into a tourist attraction, it's still worth the visit in my honest opinion.

  • Are floating markets in Bangkok only on weekends?

    A. Yes, most of the Bangkok floating markets are open on weekdays. A few of them are set up only on weekends.

  • Are taxis expensive in Bangkok?

Typical taxi fares for going a few kilometres are around 50 baht. Communication can be a problem with the majority of Bangkok's taxi drivers as they often speak little English. ... Since taxis are cheap and the drivers work all hours in traffic that is legendary, a small tip is often appreciated.

  • How much is the floating market in Bangkok?

It costs about 50 baht one way, and make sure you check at the terminal to make sure you catch the right bus. The bus drops you off about 1km from the market, so from here you will need to either walk or hire a boat to get you into the market. I've heard it's a hard haggle to get a good price!

Ankao ,
Took a 30 minute boat ride to the floating market. Very interesting with all the sights and smell of the floating market.
Hiren ,
Damnen Saduak Floating Market is 70 km from Bangkok main city. If you are travelling by Cab keep plenty of time on hand if travelling on office day. It may take up to 2 hours. But the journey is worth it. Make sure you have check the market timings and make sure the prices are per boat. Motarboats are bit costlier but it is worth visiting.
sawbograham ,
Some good souvenirs here and food as well. Marvel at the produce being sold. Snacks and fruit and veg. You can eat here and get drinks too. Worth a visit
Mike N ,
The concept was great and I'm so glad I took the small boat around but I'm not a shopper and end the end it's just people trying to sell you tons of stuff.
Dino S ,
We didn’t realize how far it is from Bangkok, it’s in the North out of Bangkok. The trip there by taxi was educational as you see the salt lakes and the fields where they grow the best coconuts in Thailand. The Floating Market was a bit disappointing as most of the stalls/shops were on the river bank. It is expensive too with the cheapest trip at 1,500 Baht per person rising up to 2,500 Baht each.
lindaStafford ,
The best trip ever . Guide was fantastic. She shared so much information with us and looked after us all day . Highly recommended. Thank you
chiangmaicharlies ,
Many reviewers report being ripped off by outrageous prices. We paid B800 each for transport there/back and entrance to the floating market, which seemed reasonable. Worth the money.
Both road journeys, there and back, were 2 hours. The market experience itself was good, but mixing paddle boats with powered boats doesn't work. They should be kept separate for different parts of the trip.
sisons2015 ,
This was my first time coming here. It was a worthwhile recommended visit. I was dropped off at an unexpected costly boat tour company by my taxi most likely for his commission. If I were to do again I would try to find a boat driver service on my own at the main market area. Overall it was a great experience and definitly would recommended to all others.
Joey from Florida ,
I read the negative reviews and do agree that it is touristy and crowded and chaotic but we loved our experience. We got many great photos and saw many unusual things. I got to pet a baby sloth and a python. It was fun to be in the middle of the chaos at least for a short time. There is an opportunity to see some local culture amid the tourist part of it. We wouldn’t have missed it.
lensgreenberg ,
Our recent visit to Damnoen Saduak was an eye opener for the grandchildren who did not know that people live their lives like this. It was both enjoyable and educational.
Ellinlaw ,
A relaxing way to spend the morning. The children loved the boat ride. A nice way to experience the culture and diversity of the scenery. If you're looking for small gifts to buy and souvenirs this is the place to be. Negotiating is a must. Always aim for half of the asking price. Also, they have pretty neat carved furniture.
joannesimpson ,
This is a tour that we did on the last day in Bangkok and we are so glad we did and did not miss out. Our guides Kris and Ken were amazing and had the whole bus is laughter. Both the floating market and the railway market are worth the visit. Thank you for the amazing experience.
Philip Enrique L ,
This market mainly caters to tourists. Boat rides are inflated in price. Everything here is expensive.
Jinxymon ,
We had a private trip to the floating market, including ride in paddle powered boat, but unfortunately it is one big traffic jam in the main area, with the fumes from the long tailed motor boats directly in your face. I would not recommend this until they ban the motor boats and only have paddle ones.
David B ,
2,000 baht an hour to tour a market selling overprice items available anywhere. Air filled with exhaust fumes, it’s nothing more than a tourist trap. They don’t even guarantee the boat will take you into the market - if you get off the boat add another 2,000 baht for the time. I’ve traveled all over thailand and love the country but this is the worse place I’ve visited.
Amy N ,
Yes, it’s expensive. We paid 4000 baht for a 2-hour boat ride through the market for 6 of us, including a stop at the coconut sugar place and a temple. The souvenirs were exorbitant compared to other places we shopped at in Bangkok, but we were able to negotiate. All of this aside, we are glad we went, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a taste of Thai life. FYI it is at least an hour and a half outside the city.
