Wat Pho is a Buddhist temple in Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in the Rattanakosin district directly adjacent to the Grand Palace. Known also as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, its official name is Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhlaram Ratchaworamahawihan. The temple is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.

The image of reclining Buddha is 15 m high and 43 m long with his right arm supporting the head with tight curls on two box-pillows of blue, richly encrusted with glass mosaics.[5] The 3 m high and 4.5 m long foot of Buddha displays are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. They are divided into 108 arranged panels, displaying the auspicious symbols by which Buddha can be identified like flowers, dancers, white elephants, tigers and altar accessories.Over the statue is a seven tiered umbrella representing the authority of Thailand. There are 108 bronze bowls in the corridor indicating the 108 auspicious characters of Buddha. People drop coins in these bowls as it is believed to bring good fortune, and to help the monks maintain the wat.Though the reclining Buddha is not a pilgrimage centre, it remains an object of popular piety.

  • Is the reclining Buddha made of gold?

As one of the largest temple complexes in the city, it's famed for its giant reclining Buddha that is 46 meters long, covered in gold leaf.

  • What does reclining Buddha mean?

A reclining Buddha is an image that represents Buddha lying down and is a major iconographic theme in Buddhist art. It represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, about to enter the parinirvana. ... After the Buddha's death, his followers decide to build a statue of him lying down.
  • What do you wear to a reclining Buddha?

Technically everyone (men and women) should wear long sleeved tops and long trousers. Shoes have to be removed when entering to see the Reclining Buddha and any bot.
  • What is the beauty of Wat Pho?

Also internationally known as the Reclining Buddha is the graceful reclining Buddha and the third largest and longest one of Thailand. The image is regarded as the most beautiful reclining Buddha image in the country. There are 108 pearl carvings of auspicious images on the Buddha's soles, in the Chinese-Thai style.
  • Why are Buddha statues gold?

The colour of gold is important in the Buddhist mysticism. Laughing Buddha statues- symbolising happiness and good health- are usually painted gold. ... Given its association with Sun, gold in Buddhism stands for knowledge, enlightenment, purity, happiness, and freedom.
  • Why do Buddhist monks wear orange?

Orange was chosen mainly because of the dye available at the time. The tradition stuck and orange is now the color of choice for Theravada Buddhist followers in Southeast Asia, as opposed to a maroon color for Tibetan monks. The robes themselves are meant to symbolize simplicity and detachment of materialism.
Renaud M ,
Very well presented and interesting exhibit on the concept of Thainess, interactive and fun displays, great for a family visit with teenagers who enjoyed the 1,5 hours visiting this museum, located right next to Wat Po and the Royal Palace. Not to be missed!
Alenj51 ,
The sleeping buddha is just one part of Wat Pho and other beautiful plac is Pagodas. Many pagoda here. Nice place great to see again.
Grace T ,
Like most of the temples we visited, the whole place is just stunning. Incredible colours and details everywhere you look.
Sanjana ,
Nice place to visit while in Thailand and there arond many temples. We enjoy alot and highly recommended this place.
LittleMsMe ,
Everything was great about this museum. A must if you are visiting Bangkok. All the lovely quirks of Thailand, presented in the very informative and interactive Thainess exhibition. BTW, it is an air-con space, self-guided tour in various languages and the staff is there to guide you. Could not expect more. Recommended after/before visiting Wat Pho. Bring change for the ice cold drinks from the (working-order) vending machines throughout the museum.
patrickperbkk ,
Very interesting museum to visit. It's highly convenient to travel by underground, getting off at Sanam Chai station, one of the most beautiful underground station in Bangkok.
katarina794 ,
It was great seeing what put the Thai in Thailand but I found it better for adults, my sons attention wasn't keep and we were in and out in about 15 minutes.
Yao H ,
Visited near end of day, with less visitors around. Interactive museum well-geared towards family / children. We did enjoy our times though - to break up the temple visits. Could offer more in-depth explanation of the exhibition, but overall it is great to wander around the exhibitions and gardens
Kim B ,
This excellent museum was interactive, educational and very entertaining. We all loved the exhibit rooms and the well done (and free) audio tour. Our kids particularly liked the dress up photo booth at the end of the museum.
MB1769 ,
This is an interactive museum focusing on the Thai people and culture. A good place for kids. We went close to closing time and had 45 minutes to tour the museum which was actually just enough time to get a good viewing of the exhibits. With kids it would definitely take longer.
Neco2015 ,
It’s nice and almost compulsory to visit, but it’s so crowded and crowds push you and difficult the visit and photos
James C ,
Currently not allowing any foreigners inside, even those who have lived and worked here for years, vote with your feet!
MrM06 ,
An absolute must visit. You won’t ever see something like this again in your lifetime. It’s very well run, and you get water in the price of admission. When inside, you are given a bag for your shoes (so they won’t get pinched from outside!) and you walk around barefoot. So wear socks!
S.A. ,
This really is a children’s museum. It’s probably great for families. But it wasn’t great for us. If you want to learn about Thai history this isn’t the place for you. It’s more about Thai culture with interactive exhibits for kids. We didn’t learn much. The entrance fee was inexpensive.
Khalid Nayeem ,
The exit of the Sanam Chai Metro Station sits on the lawns of Museum of Siam. Very easy access by Metro Blue Line.
Razvan ,
A lot to see here, especially if you like temples and weird looking structures. A little crowded, you may spend some time trying to take some pictures
